Some of her competitors hadn't been born the year Joan Benoit Samuelson ran her first Boston Marathon, in 1979—a race she won in 2:35:15. Now, at almost 51, her goal time was 15 minutes slower, and she was running the Trials not for a personal record or a ticket to Beijing, but to test her limits. That drive has made Samuelson an enduring force in the sport for the past three decades: the icon, matriarch, and legend. But the loftiness of those labels doesn't suit her character, and they aren't why she's earned the admiration of runners and New Englanders. Sunday 5/20. I ran five miles yesterday with the first 2.5 at an uptempo pace. With the wind at my back this was pretty easy. The second half was run at an easy pace and with the wind now in my face it still proved to be a good workout.

Today ~ off day from running.

Thursday ~ easy four or five miles.

Friday ~ cut the grass. This can be a great way to stay loose without the stress of a full run. The grass will need to be cut by then anyway.

Saturday ~ day off with a morning work meeting planned. Followed up with race packet pickup at the Best Western Clock Tower.

Sunday. Race Day at 7:00 a.m.!

Last year I ran a PR for the half marathon in 1:45. This year, despite not being in the same shape as I was last year, I'll shoot for 1:40. That's what runners do, right?

Good luck to everyone running the full, half and 10k races in Rockford this Sunday!
<img Saturday under cloudy skies and cool temps. 171 runners participated which seems like a great turnout considering the Chicago-Rockford half and full marathon are this next weekend. helping out along the course of the Literacy Council Half Marathon. The race is held annually (this is the 9th running) at Vasa Park in Rockford and helps as a fundraiser for the local Literacy Council. The main sponsors and organizers of the race are Rockford's Runners Image, Carlyle's Brewery & Restaurant and Red Lobster. After the race enjoy beer samples from Carlyle's and a nice seafood spread from Red Lobster. You won't regret it.

On May 20 I'll be running my third (Chicago) Rockford half marathon in downtown Rockford despite my continuing battle with a sore right ankle. Self-diagnosed but I think it is Achilles tendinitis. I digress. Last year I set a PR for the 1/2 distance and even though I'm not in the same shape as last year I will be shooting for another PR this year (isn't that what runners do?). Being the eternal optimist that I am (not) I hope to set the PR in spite of my AT and increased weight.

Last Saturday I ran the 8 mile Coyote loop at Rock Cut with fellow Coyote trail runners. It was a good workout and I really felt pretty good, even ran up the looooong 'Super Bowl' hill without stopping. It was a good training run and I really am grateful for the Coyotes. It has added a lot more fun and enjoyment to my running to belong to this trail version of the Rockford Road Runners. Nice people, great runners and they take you through a workout that far exceeds what you will attain by just running on roads or the bikepath. Thanks to Coyote Jeanne for setting a good uptempo pace.

I decided to run last Saturday with my old beat up Salomon trail shoes. They are totally shot with a ripped upper and broken shoe string. Salomon do not use your standard issue strings but use a cinched string that cannot just be bought anywhere. Therein lies the problem (I've blogged about this earlier). On my second pair of XR 3D Salomon after only 150 miles on them they will not stay tight. Believe me when running trails you don't want loose shoes. So rather than run in them I ran in the old ones and my legs are paying the price today. While I really like the fit of Salomon's trail shoes and their protective qualities I can't recommend them do to their defective lacing system. If you do buy them be sure to buy several extra pairs of their laces because you WILL have to replace them...and that isn't easy either. Sorry Salomon but you need to address this issue. I can't believe that I'm the only person with this problem. Two pairs + two sets of bad laces = one unhappy customer.

~
~<div shoes

I'm on my second pair of Salomon trail shoes. I really like the feel and fit and how they protect my feet from the many tree roots, rocks and when I accidentally ram my foot into something that I shouldn't. I like that when I land on and push off of a rock that I don't feel the pointy hard surfaces. They really do protect my feet and I heartily recommend them.

But.

The laces. The first pair that I owned (XA) broke after approximately 350 miles. I purchased them at REI in Schamburg, IL (sorry Steve) and they gladly gave me a free pair of laces. Apparently they knew that these laces should last longer than that. Also it was a royal pain in the backside to replace them but once I did they supported my feet well with know lace slippage until I finally retired the pair at 550 miles.

My current pair of XA Comps are equally as good as the original XAs, possibly more so in that I purchased a 1/2 size larger pair. This gave me a little more room in the toe box and relieved the black and blue toenail problem (gross, I know). But now after 200 miles these laces slip. During a 6 to 10 mile trail run I have to stop and tighten the laces several times. I'm sure this is not how Salomon designed them but the result is slippage in the heal and the feeling that my feet are moving around and slipping in the shoe. Not what you want when running up and down steep inclines.

I really like the feel of the shoes but this constant issue with their lacing system is not working for me. Maybe someone out there in running land can give me some pointers as to how to relieve this problem. I hope so because while I like the fit, feel and build of these shoes, the lacing system will keep me from purchasing a future pair.

Comments or guidance, anyone?
~
<img width='1' height='1' I AM going out to fast! Should I slow down? No, keep going. Why am I doing this?

My first goal was met! I made the initial trail head as part of a lead group. Funny thing though, I was already tired. Breathing hard, legs heavy, shoulders tight. Great.

By mile three I knew that I may be in for a long race but I kept the pace and moved forward. Miles four and five became more difficult and by mile six I was praying for the water stop. Once there I stopped and drank a cup of water as best I could. Try being in a hurry, gasping for air and drinking water at the same time. LOL I also took a bit of Goo with me and took off running again. Goo is a high energy food that you squirt directly into your mouth during physical activity and is meant to give you a burst of energy.

After fidgeting for five minutes with the package I finally tore it open with my teeth. I've had some pretty good tasting Goo before (from Runners Image) but this stuff reeked big time. I ate it anyway knowing I needed it. I should have brought my own but I forgot to stop by RI to buy some.

The Middle
Mud, lots of mud. I'd say most of the trails were dry but there were many patches that were only mud and water so lets just say that most runners looked black from the knees down. Water and mud-logged running shoes are not kind. It's like adding an extra three pounds to both feet and the added weight takes a toll on your legs after a while.

Mile six went pretty well but seven through ten were a real struggle with many short walks sprinkled in. The heat and humidity were sapping my energy. Taking off at the start to quickly didn't help.

The Goo must have kicked in during mile eight and I felt a little better but by the eleventh mile I was hurting big time. I do mean hurting. This was no longer fun. Maybe I should just be a bike rider...then I could sneak up behind runners on my bike and yell, "On your left" and scare the crap out of people like they do to me. But, I digress.

The Finish

Mile Twelve and I was crying for my mommy. Not really but I was craving something to eat big time and wanting that famous Cowboy Chili which I know was waiting at the end. I would have devoured just about anything by this time. I ran up the dam damn (thanks Larry) and by this time my calves were BURNING, my lungs were gasping and I thought I'd bust a gut.

Made it to the top. Reached mile 12.

In typical Coyote and Survivor fashion Larry had runners running uphill to the finish. I knew this from previous survivor races but knowing didn't help. I believe I finished in 2:28:02, about 28 minutes slower than last year's race.

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-bC0M9C8wNqo/T2zKtKPPypI/AAAAAAAAA_w/mENr8qCwhI4/s1600/finish.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; />

This was one tough race. I must say it was the toughest I've done. A combination of the unseasonably warm day and higher humidity combined with my failure to plan properly and start to quickly finished me off.

But, I earned the shirt.

The WSUOS.

On to next year...Are you game?

Thank you to Larry Swanson and all of the volunteers who stage this excellent series each year and kudos to the photographers who posted many pictures on 20k, the last race of the four-race Survivor winter series.

For the past four months those of us who live in the area have run in cooler temps. While this winter was certainly warmer than normal, we still have had to bundle up properly during our outdoor runs.

Typically during the winter running season we don't sweat as much during our workouts. The result is that we get out of the habit of drinking water before and during our runs. That habit better return quickly or many people will be hurting this Saturday.

I ran the six mile Coyote loop at Rock Cut yesterday. Nice day, mid-sixties and the warm sun felt good. Have way through I was sweating big time and had that dry feeling in my mouth. I didn't drink before or during the run. Forgot all about it.

So remember during the warmer Spring-like weather to hydrate well before you toe the starting line. A the 20k may feel like a full marathon on Saturday, with a current forecast for a sunny 70 degree day. According to the Survivor 20k letter that just went out, there will be water stops at the three, six and nine mile marks. Use them!
~
~
<img width='1' February 18's Survivor 15k. After taking a few days off after the race I meant to continue training but came down with a cold. I don't need to explain how one feels with a cold. Tired, sluggish, etc.

So, finally feeling better, I ran five miles this morning. It felt good to be out there again but the entire run I'm thinking "in 16 days I'm racing a trail 20k!" and wondering how I'm going to do it. Go out fast? Slow? Just run to finish and earn the UOS?

I know what will happen. Once I toe the starting line on race day I'll take off with everyone else and just hang on for the ride. That, and dream of hot chocolate and cookies after the race with my third Survivor shirt proudly draped over my shoulder. :)

Next run: Saturday morning 8-mile trail loop with my fellow Coyotes.<br bad one but just bad enough that I feel tired and rundown. Only ran 7 miles this past week in an effort to recover faster. My plan is to run Monday morning, we'll see how that goes. Plus I need to get in at least two 20k runs in before the last Survivor race in March.
~
~
<img width='1' height='1' the noon start. The course was a mixture of slushy snow, mud, ice and dirt. Most finishers had a good amount of mud caked on their legs and shoes.

Thank you and kudos to Race Director Larry Swanson and all of the volunteers that continue to make this a top quality event which is also part of Trail Runner magazine's Trophy Series. The Trophy Series is a national event that includes many trail races. Runners gain points by running in these races. All four of the Rock Cut Survivor Series races are part of this series.

I wiped out. Within a mile of the start I slipped in mud, my right foot slipping out from under me when I planted it. I was down on my right side before I knew it. No injuries, just a cut on the knee which gave me nice bragging rights at the finish. "Oh, when did you get that...cool", trail runners understand. I bounced up and continued, trying to stay towards the front of the pack. I knew the muddy trails would only get muddier as more and more runners used them so I wanted to stay in front as long as I could.

I felt good, although winded, until mile six. I started sucking wind at that point as the hills began to take a toll on my legs. That steep uphill rope climb didn't help. Most of the next mile and a half was a combination of downhill trails, zigzagging left and right. I made up some time at this point and was also able to rest a little as the downhill helped my momentum without the pounding of running uphill.

At mile eight I was feeling pretty bad again, know that several more long hilly stretches lay ahead. After stopping for the second time to tighten my Salomon's (grrr) I gutted it out to the finish. In typical Larry style, the last one hundred yards to the finish were uphill too. lol.

I had a little faster time this year over last year. I'm surprised because I haven't been able to run quite as many miles over the last few months. Guess I'm in better shape than I thought even though I've gained a little weight.

Check out http://www.rockcuttrailruns.org for the final results.

*2/27/12
I ended up with an official time of 1:25:20, good for 111th place out of 350 total runners. In my Age Group I finished 6th out of 15.

Some pictures from the 15k. Thank you to the photographers, Candi, Christina and Ron.

<a Saturday is the third Survivor trail race. 9.3 miles (15k) thru what appears to be a muddy and icy trail course. Most of the snow is melted away and with temps promised in the mid 30s to low 40s between now and race day it doesn't look like we will have snow to worry about. Mud and ice can certainly be equally as bad as snow. Screws in the shoes!

I ran with fellow Coyotes last weekend over the same course as a preview. It is a tough race complete with a steep hill in which you need to use a rope to pull yourself up as well as wooden steps up and down, some creeks to jump over and a very curvy course. I'm sure there will be many runners full of mud by race end.

Today I plan to run an easy five on the roads and then Friday is a rest day. Saturday, the battle begins at high noon.

Rock Cut Trail up with the Coyotes at Rock Cut. We ran the eight mile Coyote loop and I followed that up with an extra mile in preparation for the Survivor 15k coming up in another couple of weeks. That's 9.3 miles for you non-running, non-european types. :)

About half way through the run Wheezie started talking about breakfast and how she loves eggs...and bacon...and toast...and bacon. I was doing just fine, having eaten a bowl of cereal about an hour before our 8:00 a.m. jaunt over the trails. Immediately my mouth began watering and for the next several miles all I could think about was FOOD. Any food. Certainly breakfast but also Oreos, pancakes, coffee...you know, nothing that is good for you but soooo good going down. As I write this have only eaten a small amount of bread and coffee, so I have held off from eating much. I'm trying to cut back a little because I've gained weight during these past several months and I don't like it one bit!

But, eggs over easy, crisp bacon, crunchy toast with butter and strawberry jam do sound pretty good. Maybe for dinner.

And don't forget the Folgers...
~
~
<img width='1' height='1' more inches of snow. So that, on top of the snow and ice that we already had, made for some difficult running.

I went out faster at the beginning in an effort to make to the single track trail before they become clogged with runners. I then settled into what I figured would be an uptempo run. I wasn't thinking about the fresh snow although that soon changed!

After only a 1/2 mile I was already warm, shedding my gloves and wishing I didn't have my hat on. At this point the guy in shorts seemed to be smarter than I was.

Midway through the run a high school age runner went past me, high stepping through the one foot deep snow. I glanced down and her right shoelace was dangling. She'll come back, I thought and I was right. A mile up the trail and there she was, bent over, gasping for breath and tying her shoes. Ha, I thought...as I too gasped for air.

I ran quite a bit slower than in last year's Survivor 10k but still finished 6th in my age group. I'm probably not in quite the shape I was last year, actually I know I'm not, but happy to have survived!

Next up is the February Survivor 15k!
~
~
<img width='1' Egads I hate that. I remember not enjoying it last year or the year before either. But, I must persevere. I have to earn that blasted ugly orange Survivor t-shirt. :)

I heard someone say that we could receive 5-6 inches of fresh snow on Friday. No. Please. No.
~
~

An alternative to the Chicago Marathon

No. I don't mean the Spring 'Rockford' Marathon. (They should call it the Chicago-Rockford Marathon if you catch my drift.

Anyway, I digress...

In October will be the 3rd annual Stone Bridge Marathon which is run in the Roscoe/Belvidere area.

Advantages:
1. No crowds
2. You don't need to leave at 4:00 a.m. race day to run Chicago.
3. You won't need to take out a loan just to pay the increased tolls on I90. Thanks to the Tollway Board and our lawmakers who continue to tax us to death.
4. You can support a truly local marathon.
5. Your family and friends can actually go with you, cheer for you and see you along the course.
6. Run through outlying scenic course rather than a concrete jungle.
7. You can run the marathon and be home napping by noon.
8. You'll see fellow friends and runners from the area.
9. You won't have to run the first ten miles in a sea of people.
10. After the race you can visit a local eatery for fun and celebration with your friends, family and running besties!

More info here.

Use the 'Rockford' Half-Marathon race in May as a training run to help you gear up for the LOCAL Belvidere YMCA Marathon in October 2012.

Survivor 5K Race and Survivor info

Edit 1/20/12: I am completely brain dead sometimes. In the first paragraph I wrote there was no snow. There was a LOT of snow and I didn't like it. Ha. Thanks, Lindsay for pointing out my mistake!

I ran the Survivor 5k on December 17th and once again it was a very well organized race. There certainly seemed to be many more runners than last year, which is a good thing. There was NO snow or ice for which I am eternally grateful, lol.

As I promised myself, I went out slowly and planned on surviving the 4-race series rather than 'racing' it for a fast time. I've had a couple of hamstring injuries over the past year along with achilles tendinitis (which I still recovering from) so I don't want to injure myself further. Still, my finishing time and place was well below that of the previous two Survivor Series 5K that I ran in 2009 and 2010 and I have to admit that hurts the ego a little.

The only problem with starting out slowly and not getting out ahead of the pack is that when running on trails with that many runners it is easy for the trails to become congested. Three times I was standing still, waiting for runners(?) to run down a hill or run across an admittedly slippery yet short wooden bridge. C'mon people, its a race!

Those issues aside it was a fun time and I thank Larry Swanson and all of the volunteers who direct this race each year. However I've learned and in the next race (the 10K in January) I'll be going out faster so as to be ahead of the pack before we hit the narrow trails.

The remaining three Survivor races will be held on January 21, February 18 and March 17. All races have a noon start. More info can be found here and on the Rockford Roadrunners Facebook Page here. Sign up and run!

2012 Rockford Literacy Council Half Marathon

Mark your calendars. May 12th, 2012 is the next Rockford Literacy Council Half Marathon. This is a combination of roads and trails and is an ongoing fund raiser for the Rockford Literacy Council.

It is also co-sponsored and organized by the folks at Runner's Image and Carlyle's Brewery in downtown Rockford.
~
~
